حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ، عَنْ بُكَيْرٍ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ آلِ مَرْوَانَ كَانَ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ، فَدَعَا سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَسُبَّ عَلِيًّا، فَأَبَى سَهْلٌ. فَقَالَ لَهُ: أَمَّا إِذًا فَقُلْ لَعَنَ اللَّهُ أَبَا تُرَابٍ. فَقَالَ سَهْلٌ: مَا كَانَ لِعَلِيٍّ اسْمٌ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ أَبِي تُرَابٍ.

📖 English Translation

Sahl bin Sa’d reported that a man from the family of Marwan was appointed as the governor of Medina. He called Sahl and ordered him to curse Ali (RA). Sahl refused, so the governor said: “If you do not agree, at least say: May Allah curse Abu Turab.”

Sahl replied: “There was no name dearer to Ali (RA) than Abu Turab, for it was given to him by the Prophet ﷺ himself, and he felt delighted when he was called by this name.”

The governor then asked him about the story behind the name. Sahl narrated that one day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to the house of Fatima (RA) and did not find Ali (RA) there. He asked: “Where is your husband?” She replied: “There was a disagreement between us, and he left the house.”

The Prophet ﷺ then asked a companion to find him. They found Ali (RA) sleeping in the mosque with dust on his back. The Prophet ﷺ approached him, wiped the dust from his back, and affectionately said: ‘Get up, O Abu Turab (the one covered with dust)!’

📜 اردو ترجمہ

سہل بن سعدؓ بیان کرتے ہیں کہ آل مروان میں سے ایک شخص مدینہ کا گورنر مقرر ہوا۔ اس نے سہل بن سعدؓ کو بلا کر حکم دیا کہ حضرت علیؓ پر سبّ و شتم کرو۔ سہل نے انکار کر دیا۔

گورنر نے کہا: “اگر تم ان پر لعنت نہیں بھیج سکتے، تو اتنا کہہ دو کہ اللہ ابوتراب پر لعنت کرے۔”

سہل نے جواب دیا: “حضرت علیؓ کے لیے کوئی نام ابوتراب سے زیادہ محبوب نہ تھا، کیونکہ یہ نام انہیں خود نبی کریم ﷺ نے دیا تھا، اور وہ اس سے خوش ہوتے تھے۔”

گورنر نے پھر پوچھا کہ انہیں ابوتراب کیوں کہا گیا؟ سہل نے بتایا کہ نبی کریم ﷺ حضرت فاطمہؓ کے گھر تشریف لائے تو حضرت علیؓ وہاں موجود نہ تھے۔ جب حضرت علیؓ کو تلاش کیا گیا تو وہ مسجد میں سو رہے تھے، اور ان کی کمر پر مٹی لگی ہوئی تھی۔

نبی کریم ﷺ نے ان کے جسم سے مٹی صاف کرتے ہوئے محبت سے فرمایا: “اٹھو، اے ابوتراب (مٹی میں لت پت)! اٹھو، اے ابوتراب!”
