The 4 Quls
The 4 Quls are known as protecting Surahs. Surah Al-Kafiroun and Al-Ikhlas protect from shirk. Surahs Al-Falaq and An-Naas protect from mischief of created things, envy, magic and the whisperings of the shaitaan.
According to the Hadith, Surah Al-Ikhlas reward is equivalent to one third of the Quran while Surah Al-Kafiroun is one quarter.
All the Surahs start with the word ‘Qul’ which in Arabic means ‘say’. Hence the four Surahs are collectively called as ‘the four quls’. Prophet Muhammad(S.A.W) would get revelations from Allah(S.W.T) which would start with the word ‘say’ and he would repeat exactly, the revelations to people.
The 4 Quls start as:
- Al-Kafiroun: [109.1] Say: O unbelievers
- Al-Ikhlas: [112.1] Say: He is Allah, the One
- Al-Falaq: [113.1] Say: I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of Daybreak
- An-Naas: [114.1] Say: I seek refuge with (Allah)
Hadith 1:
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ هِلاَلِ بْنِ يِسَافٍ، عَنْ رَبِيعِ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى، عَنِ امْرَأَةٍ، عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ” { قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ } ثُلُثُ الْقُرْآنِ ” . قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مَا أَعْرِفُ إِسْنَادًا أَطْوَلَ مِنْ هَذَا .
It was narrated from Abu Ayyub that: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Say: He is Allah, (the) One” is one-third of the Quran.”

Hadith 2:
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُوسَى الْحَرَشِيُّ الْبَصْرِيُّ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سَلْمِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ الْعِجْلِيُّ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ثَابِتٌ الْبُنَانِيُّ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم “ مَنْ قَرَأَ إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ عُدِلَتْ لَهُ بِنِصْفِ الْقُرْآنِ وَمَنْ قَرَأَْ قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ ) عُدِلَتْ لَهُ بِرُبْعِ الْقُرْآنِ وَمَنْ قَرَأَْ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ) عُدِلَتْ لَهُ بِثُلُثِ الْقُرْآنِ ” . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ حَدِيثِ هَذَا الشَّيْخِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ سَلْمٍ . وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ .
Narrated Anas bin Malik: that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever recites Idha Zulzilat, it equals half of the Qur’an for him. Whoever recites: Qul Ya Ayyuhal-Kafirun it equals a fourth of the Qur’an for him. And whoever recites: Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad it equals a third of the Qur’an for him.”

Hadith 3:
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُصَفَّى، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي فُدَيْكٍ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِي أَسِيدٍ الْبَرَّادِ، عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ خُبَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ خَرَجْنَا فِي لَيْلَةِ مَطَرٍ وَظُلْمَةٍ شَدِيدَةٍ نَطْلُبُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم لِيُصَلِّيَ لَنَا فَأَدْرَكْنَاهُ فَقَالَ ” أَصَلَّيْتُمْ ” . فَلَمْ أَقُلْ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ ” قُلْ ” . فَلَمْ أَقُلْ شَيْئًا ثُمَّ قَالَ ” قُلْ ” . فَلَمْ أَقُلْ شَيْئًا ثُمَّ قَالَ ” قُلْ ” . فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا أَقُولُ قَالَ ” { قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ } وَالْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ حِينَ تُمْسِي وَحِينَ تُصْبِحُ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ تَكْفِيكَ مِنْ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ ” .
Narrated Abdullah ibn Khubayb:
We went out one rainy and intensely dark night to look for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to lead us in prayer, and when we found him, he asked: Have you prayed?, but I did not say anything. So he said: Say, but I did not say anything. He again said: Say, but I did not say anything. He then said: Say. So I said: What am I to say? He said: Say: “Say, He is Allah, One,” and al-Mu’awwadhatan three times in the morning and evening; they will serve you for every purpose.
