Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un (Arabic: إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ, ʾinnā li-llāhi wa-ʾinna ʾilayhi rājiʿūna) is a phrase mentioned in verse 2:156 of the Qur’an meaning “Verily we belong to God, and verily to Him do we return.” The phrase is commonly recited by Muslims when a person experiences a tragedy in life, especially upon hearing news that a person has died, so people use it more frequently for condolence. The phrase may also be recited in situations that involve risk of any sort.
