English Meaning

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Self-Sufficient, on whom all depend. He does not beget, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him. (Quran 112:1–4)

Chinese Translation (中文翻译)

奉至仁至慈的真主之名。你说:他是真主,是独一的。真主是自足的,万物都依赖他。他不生育,也不被生育。没有任何事物可与他相比。(《古兰经》112:1–4)

Bengali Translation (বাংলা অনুবাদ)

পরম করুণাময়, অসীম দয়ালু আল্লাহর নামে। বলুন: তিনি আল্লাহ, এক। আল্লাহ অমুখাপেক্ষী, সবাই তাঁর উপর নির্ভরশীল। তিনি কাউকে জন্ম দেননি এবং তাঁকেও জন্ম দেওয়া হয়নি। আর তাঁর সমতুল্য কেউ নেই। (সূরা আল-ইখলাস ১১২:১–৪)

Hindi Translation (हिंदी अनुवाद)

अल्लाह के नाम से जो बड़ा मेहरबान, निहायत रहम वाला है। कहिए: वह अल्लाह एक है। अल्लाह बेनियाज़ है, सब उसी पर निर्भर हैं। न उसने किसी को जन्म दिया और न वह किसी से जन्मा। और कोई उसके बराबर नहीं है। (क़ुरआन 112:1–4)

Word by Word Meaning

  • Qul – say (a command to the Prophet ﷺ and, through him, to every believer)
  • Huwa Allahu – He is Allah
  • Ahad – One, unique, with no second
  • As-Samad – the Self-Sufficient, the One everyone turns to in need
  • Lam yalid – He did not beget (has no children)
  • Wa lam yulad – and He was not begotten (has no parents)
  • Wa lam yakun lahu – and there is not for Him
  • Kufuwan ahad – any equal or match

In four short lines, Surah Ikhlas states pure Tawhid: Allah is one, everything needs Him, He has no family line, and nothing in creation is like Him. This is why it is called Al-Ikhlas, meaning sincerity or purity of belief.

Virtues of Surah Ikhlas in Authentic Hadith

Equal to one third of the Quran. A man heard another man reciting this surah again and again and told the Prophet ﷺ about it. The Prophet ﷺ said that, by the One in whose hand his life is, this surah is equal to one third of the Quran (Sahih Bukhari 5013). In another narration he asked his companions whether they could recite a third of the Quran in one night, and then explained that this surah is equal to it (Sahih Bukhari 5015).

Love for this surah. Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that a man leading prayer used to end his recitation with Qul Huwallahu Ahad. When asked why, he said it describes the attributes of the Most Merciful and he loves to recite it. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Tell him that Allah loves him” (Sahih Bukhari 7375; also Sahih Muslim 813).

Before sleeping. Every night when the Prophet ﷺ went to bed, he cupped his hands, blew into them after reciting Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, and wiped over as much of his body as he could, three times (Sahih Bukhari 5017).

When and How to Recite Surah Ikhlas

  • In salah: after Surah Al-Fatiha in any rakah. It is short, so it is often the first surah children memorise for prayer.
  • Before sleeping: recite it with Surah Falaq and Surah Nas, blow into your cupped hands and wipe over your body, three times, as in Bukhari 5017.
  • Any time: there is no fixed number. Some people recite it three times hoping for the reward of a full Quran, based on the one-third hadith; recite with understanding rather than only counting.
  • With reflection: read the meaning once in your own language so the words strengthen your belief, not just your memory.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Saying “Allahu samad” without the “s” sound joined: the correct reading is Allahus-samad.
  • Reading “kufuwan” too fast as “kufwan”. The letter waw should be pronounced.
  • Stopping on “ahad” with a full “dun” sound. When you pause at the end of a verse, say “ahad” with a light echo (qalqalah) on the “d”.
  • Thinking that reciting it three times removes the need to read the rest of the Quran. The hadith describes reward, not a replacement for the whole Quran.

Teaching Surah Ikhlas to Children

Because the surah is only four lines, most children learn it in a few days. Teach one verse per day, say it together after each prayer, and explain the meaning in simple words: Allah is one, He needs no one, and no one is like Him. Then add Surah Falaq and Surah Nas so they can follow the bedtime sunnah.
