Subhanallah in Arabic in the Quran
The Quran uses the word “subhan” many times. Surah Al-Isra even begins with it, glorifying Allah who took His servant on the Night Journey (Quran 17:1). Allah also commands the believers to glorify His name directly:
Roman Urdu: Fasabbih bismi rabbikal azeem.
English: “So glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great.” (Quran 56:96)
Subhanallahi wa Bihamdihi: An Authentic Dhikr
The Prophet ﷺ taught a longer form that joins glory with praise. He said that two phrases are light on the tongue, heavy on the scale and beloved to the Most Merciful (Sahih Bukhari 6406):
Roman Urdu: Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi, Subhanallahil azeem.
English: “Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him; glory be to Allah, the Most Great.”
In another hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said that whoever says “Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi” one hundred times in a day will have his sins forgiven, even if they are like the foam of the sea (Sahih Bukhari 6405).
When to Say Subhanallah in Arabic
There is no fixed time for this dhikr. You can say it standing, sitting, walking or lying down, and you do not need wudu for it. Some good moments are:
- Before sleeping: the Prophet ﷺ taught his daughter Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) to say Subhanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times and Allahu Akbar 34 times when going to bed (Sahih Bukhari 3113).
- During the day: repeat “Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi” while travelling, cooking or waiting.
- When you see something beautiful or surprising: many Muslims say Subhanallah to remember that the Creator is greater than anything He created.
- In free moments: instead of scrolling, count a few rounds on your fingers.
Subhanallah vs Mashallah vs Alhamdulillah
These three phrases are often mixed up, so here is a simple guide:
- Subhanallah – “Glory be to Allah”. It declares that Allah is free from every flaw.
- Mashallah – “What Allah has willed”. It is said when admiring a blessing.
- Alhamdulillah – “All praise is for Allah”. It is said to thank Allah.
Once you know Subhanallah in Arabic, the other two are easy to learn as well. You can say more than one together. For example, the tasbih before sleep includes Subhanallah and Alhamdulillah side by side.
Common Mistakes When Writing Subhanallah
- Dropping the alif: leaving out the long alif after the ha (writing it like “Subhn”) changes the standard spelling.
- Using a light h: the sound is ح, so avoid saying it like “Sub-han” with an English h if you can.
- Saying it as a joke: it is a form of worship, so say it with respect.
- Copying text with broken letters: some apps break Arabic shaping. Use the copy button above to get clean Subhanallah in Arabic text.
