Sone ki dua is the short supplication the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said every night before going to sleep: Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya. Many people also search for it as “sote waqt ki dua”, “sleeping dua” or “dua before sleeping”, and on this page you will find it in Arabic with Roman Urdu, Urdu tarjuma and English meaning.

We have also added the matching dua for waking up, because both come together in the same authentic hadith. You can copy the Arabic text with one tap using the button under each dua.
Sone Ki Dua in Arabic (Copy Paste)
This is the exact Arabic wording narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari. It is only four words, so even children can memorise it in a single evening.
بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا
Sone Ki Dua in Roman Urdu
If you cannot read Arabic yet, use this Roman Urdu pronunciation as a helper, and try to learn the correct Arabic sound from a teacher or a recitation over time:
Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya.
Some books write it as “Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya”. Both orders are found in authentic narrations, and the meaning is the same.
Sone Ki Dua Urdu Tarjuma
اے اللہ! میں تیرے ہی نام کے ساتھ مرتا (یعنی سوتا) ہوں اور تیرے ہی نام کے ساتھ جیتا (یعنی جاگتا) ہوں۔
English Meaning and Word by Word
English meaning: “In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.”
- بِاسْمِكَ (Bismika) – in Your name
- اللَّهُمَّ (Allahumma) – O Allah
- أَمُوتُ (Amutu) – I die
- وَأَحْيَا (Wa ahya) – and I live
Here “dying” refers to sleep and “living” refers to waking up. Sleep is called a minor death because the soul is taken by Allah for a while and then returned.
Source of Sone Ki Dua: Sahih Bukhari and the Quran
Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when the Prophet ﷺ lay down in his bed at night, he would place his hand under his cheek and say this dua, and when he woke up he would say the waking dua given below. You can read the full hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari 6324 on sunnah.com.
The idea behind the dua is also found in the Quran. In Surah Az-Zumar, verse 39:42, Allah tells us that He takes the souls at the time of death, and also the souls of those who do not die, during their sleep. He keeps the ones whose death He has decreed and sends the others back until an appointed time.
So every time we sleep, we are placing our soul in Allah’s care. That is why the Prophet ﷺ began his night with His name.
Neend Se Uthne Ki Dua (Waking Up Dua)
In the same hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said these words when he woke up:
English meaning: “All praise is for Allah who gave us life after He had caused us to die, and to Him is the return.”
When and How to Read Sone Ki Dua
The Sunnah way is simple. Follow these steps every night:
- Lie down on your right side, as the Prophet ﷺ placed his hand under his cheek.
- Recite the dua once: Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya.
- Recite Ayatul Kursi (2:255). In Sahih al-Bukhari 2311, reciting it at bedtime is linked to a guardian from Allah staying with you until morning.
- Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, blow into your cupped hands and wipe over your body, as described by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) in Sahih al-Bukhari 5017.
- Make your last words the remembrance of Allah, then sleep.
The dua can be read silently or softly. You do not need wudu to say it, although sleeping in a state of wudu is a good habit.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
These are the errors we see most often when people learn sone ki dua:
- Mixing up the two duas: “Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya” is for sleeping; “Alhamdu lillahil-lazi ahyana” is for waking.
- Wrong pronunciation: “amutu” has a long “u” (أَمُوتُ). Saying “amutta” or “amoota” changes the sound of the word.
- Adding extra lines: Keep to the wording of the hadith. Long additions found on social media images are often not from any authentic source.
- Reading only from a screen: Try to memorise it, so you can recite it in the dark without picking up your phone.
Teaching Sone Ki Dua to Children
Because it is so short, this is often one of the first duas children learn. Say it aloud with them at bedtime for a week and they will usually remember it on their own.
Explain the meaning in simple words: “We go to sleep with Allah’s name, and we wake up thanking Allah.” This builds the habit of starting and ending each day with Him.
