The importance of the 15th night of Sha’ban is a subject of debate among Muslims. Some celebrate the night with special prayers and fast the following day, while others say that this practice is not from the Sunnah.

The reality is that scholars consider the hadiths about 15th Sha’ban as being sound (Sahih), good (Hassan) and weak (Dha’if). However, due to the fact that there are numerous hadith, and the weakness of many of the hadith is not severe, the virtue of this night is accepted as authentic by scholars.

Fasting in the middle of Sha’ban(15th Shaban):

Hadith 2745 Sahih Muslim

‘Imran b. Husain (Allah be pleased with them) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to him (or he said to another person and he was listening to it):O, so and so, did you observe fast in the middle of the month? He said: No. Thereupon he (the Messenger of Allah) said: When you break it, then observe fast for two days.

وَحَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَسْمَاءَ الضُّبَعِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا مَهْدِيٌّ، – وَهُوَ ابْنُ مَيْمُونٍ – حَدَّثَنَا غَيْلاَنُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ، – رضى الله عنهما – أَنَّصلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ لَهُ أَوْ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ وَهُوَ يَسْمَعُ ‏”‏ يَا فُلاَنُ أَصُمْتَ مِنْ سُرَّةِ هَذَا الشَّهْرِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ لاَ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏”‏ فَإِذَا أَفْطَرْتَ فَصُمْ يَوْمَيْنِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

Second Hadith Which confirm the month of Shaban:

‘Imran b. Husain (Allah be pleased with them) reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace he upon him) having said to him or to someone else:Did you fast in the middle of Sha’ban? He said: No. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: If you did not observe fast, then you should observe fast for two days.

حَدَّثَنَا هَدَّابُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ، – وَلَمْ أَفْهَمْ مُطَرِّفًا مِنْ هَدَّابٍ – عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ، – رضى الله عنهما – أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ لَهُ أَوْ لآخَرَ ‏”‏ أَصُمْتَ مِنْ سَرَرِ شَعْبَانَ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ لاَ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏”‏ فَإِذَا أَفْطَرْتَ فَصُمْ يَوْمَيْنِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏
