📖 English Translation

Sahl bin Sa’d reported that a man from the family of Marwan was appointed as the governor of Medina. He called Sahl and ordered him to curse Ali (RA). Sahl refused, so the governor said: “If you do not agree, at least say: May Allah curse Abu Turab.”

Sahl replied: “There was no name dearer to Ali (RA) than Abu Turab, for it was given to him by the Prophet ﷺ himself, and he felt delighted when he was called by this name.”

The governor then asked him about the story behind the name. Sahl narrated that one day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to the house of Fatima (RA) and did not find Ali (RA) there. He asked: “Where is your husband?” She replied: “There was a disagreement between us, and he left the house.”

The Prophet ﷺ then asked a companion to find him. They found Ali (RA) sleeping in the mosque with dust on his back. The Prophet ﷺ approached him, wiped the dust from his back, and affectionately said: ‘Get up, O Abu Turab (the one covered with dust)!’
