Safar ki dua is the supplication the Prophet ﷺ recited when he set out on a journey. Below is the complete safar ki dua in Arabic from Sahih Muslim, with Roman Urdu, Urdu tarjuma and English meaning, followed by the short sawari ki dua (gari mein baithne ki dua) from the Quran and the dua for returning home. Some people also call it the travel dua or musafir ki dua.

Safar Ki Dua in Arabic (Sahih Muslim 1342)
Abdullah bin Umar reported that when the Prophet ﷺ mounted his camel to travel, he said Allahu Akbar three times and then recited this dua:

Safar Ki Dua Meaning in English
English: Allah is the Greatest (three times). Glory be to the One who has placed this under our control, though we could not have done it ourselves, and to our Lord we will surely return. O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for righteousness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance for us. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Guardian of the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, from distressing sights, and from an evil outcome in wealth and family.
The dua asks Allah for three things on every journey: that it be spent in good deeds, that it be easy, and that the family and wealth left behind stay safe.
Short Sawari Ki Dua / Gari Mein Baithne Ki Dua (Quran 43:13–14)
The opening part of safar ki dua comes from Surah Az-Zukhruf. Many people recite this short part whenever they sit in a car, bus, train or plane, even for a short trip in the city:
Roman Urdu: Subḥānalladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahū muqrinīn, wa innā ilā rabbinā lamunqalibūn.

In the same hadith, when the Prophet ﷺ came back from a journey, he recited safar ki dua again and added:
Roman Urdu: Āyibūna tā’ibūna ʿābidūna li rabbinā ḥāmidūn.
English: We return, repenting, worshipping and praising our Lord.
Dua When Stopping at a Place During Travel
When you stop at a hotel, rest area or any new place on your journey, the Prophet ﷺ taught a short dua for protection. Read it with Urdu meaning on our Auzu Bikalimatillahi dua page.
