Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina ‘adhaban-nar.
Read it slowly in three parts: “Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan” / “wa fil-akhirati hasanatan” / “wa qina ‘adhaban-nar”. Roman spelling only helps you start; try to learn the Arabic pronunciation from a teacher or a recitation.
“Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” (Quran 2:201)
Word by word:
The word “hasanah” is left open on purpose. It covers everything good in this life, such as faith, health, halal income, knowledge and a righteous family, and everything good in the next life, such as forgiveness and Paradise.
The dua comes in Surah Al-Baqarah, verses 2:200–202, in the passage about Hajj. Allah mentions people who only ask for this world and have no share in the Hereafter, and then praises those who ask for good in both worlds. The next verse says: “Those will have a share of what they have earned, and Allah is swift in account.” (2:202)
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say this dua, beginning it with “Allahumma” (O Allah). See Sahih Bukhari 4522. In Sahih Bukhari 6389 and Sahih Muslim 2690a, Anas says it was the dua the Prophet ﷺ made most often.
Allahumma Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina ‘adhaban-nar.
English: “O Allah, our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”
There is no fixed time for this dua, which is why it suits almost any moment. Because the Prophet ﷺ said it so often, many Muslims make it a daily habit.
Begin with praise of Allah and durood on the Prophet ﷺ, raise your hands if you wish, say the dua with attention to its meaning, and say “Ameen” at the end. You can repeat it as many times as you like.
The main virtue of rabbana atina fid dunya is simple: it was the dua the Prophet ﷺ made most often, as Anas reported. That alone makes it one of the best duas to keep on your tongue.
It is also easy to learn. Children can memorise it in a day, and adults who know only a few duas can rely on it, because it asks for every good in both worlds and protection from the Fire in a single sentence.
