Source of Rabbana Atina Fid Dunya: Quran and Sahih Hadith
The dua comes in Surah Al-Baqarah, verses 2:200–202, in the passage about Hajj. Allah mentions people who only ask for this world and have no share in the Hereafter, and then praises those who ask for good in both worlds. The next verse says: “Those will have a share of what they have earned, and Allah is swift in account.” (2:202)
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say this dua, beginning it with “Allahumma” (O Allah). See Sahih Bukhari 4522. In Sahih Bukhari 6389 and Sahih Muslim 2690a, Anas says it was the dua the Prophet ﷺ made most often.

When and How to Read Rabbana Atina Fid Dunya
There is no fixed time for this dua, which is why it suits almost any moment. Because the Prophet ﷺ said it so often, many Muslims make it a daily habit.
- At the end of your personal duas after salah, as a short summary of everything you need.
- In sajdah during nafl prayers, or in the last sitting before salam.
- During Hajj and Umrah, since the verse itself comes in the passage about the rites of Hajj.
- When you are worried about the future, your studies, work or family and do not know exactly what to ask for.
- Before a journey, an exam or a new job, together with other duas you know.
Begin with praise of Allah and durood on the Prophet ﷺ, raise your hands if you wish, say the dua with attention to its meaning, and say “Ameen” at the end. You can repeat it as many times as you like.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Dropping the vowels: say “hasanatan” with the “-tan” ending in the middle of the dua, not just “hasanah”.
- Mixing up “atina” and “aatina”: both Roman spellings point to the same Arabic word آتِنَا, so do not worry about the English spelling; focus on the Arabic sound.
- Asking only for the world: the verse before this dua warns against asking only for worldly things, so keep both halves.
- Reading without meaning: learn the translation so your heart follows your tongue.
Benefits of Rabbana Atina Fid Dunya
The main virtue of rabbana atina fid dunya is simple: it was the dua the Prophet ﷺ made most often, as Anas reported. That alone makes it one of the best duas to keep on your tongue.
It is also easy to learn. Children can memorise it in a day, and adults who know only a few duas can rely on it, because it asks for every good in both worlds and protection from the Fire in a single sentence.
