Hindi Translation (हिंदी अनुवाद)

Word-by-Word Meaning

  • Assalamu alaikum – peace be upon you
  • Ahlad-diyar – O people of these dwellings (the graves)
  • Minal mu’minina wal muslimin – from among the believers and the Muslims
  • Wa inna in sha Allah – and we, if Allah wills
  • Lalahiqun – will surely join you
  • As’alullaha lana wa lakum – I ask Allah for us and for you
  • Al-‘afiyah – safety and well-being

Notice that the dua begins with salam, the same greeting we give to living people. It reminds the visitor that the people in the graves were believers like us, and that we will follow them one day.

Source of Qabristan Jane Ki Dua in Hadith

Buraydah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach the companions what to say when they went out to the graveyards: “Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of these dwellings, from among the believers and the Muslims. And we, if Allah wills, will surely join you. I ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.” This is recorded in Sahih Muslim 975.

Visiting graves itself is a Sunnah for reflection. The Prophet ﷺ said that he had earlier forbidden visiting graves, and then allowed it: “so visit them.” This is reported in Sahih Muslim 977.

Visiting a grave should bring patience, not complaint. The Prophet ﷺ passed by a woman weeping at a grave and told her to fear Allah and be patient, and taught that true patience is at the first shock. This is recorded in Sahih Bukhari 1283.

Quranic Dua for Those Who Passed Away

After greeting the people of the graves, you can make any sincere dua for them. A beautiful dua from the Quran asks forgiveness for us and for the believers who went before us:

Rabbanaghfir lana wa li-ikhwaninal-ladhina sabaquna bil-iman. “Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith.” (Quran 59:10)

When and How to Read Qabristan Jane Ki Dua

Read qabristan jane ki dua when you enter a graveyard or pass by graves, for example at a funeral, when visiting the grave of a parent, or on a planned visit for reflection. A simple way to do it:

  • Go with a clean intention: to remember death and to pray for the deceased.
  • On entering, say the greeting once, softly or silently.
  • Walk with respect. Do not sit on graves or walk over them carelessly.
  • Make dua for forgiveness for the person you are visiting and for all the Muslims buried there, in Arabic or in your own language.
  • Reflect on your own life and leave without loud talk or complaint.

Every soul will taste death (Quran 3:185), and the graveyard is a strong reminder of this. Scholars differ on some customs people practise at graves, so this page sticks to the greeting taught in the hadith above and to general dua for the deceased.

A Reminder from Surah At-Takathur

The Quran warns about chasing more and more of this world until death arrives:

“Competing for more distracted you, until you visit the graves.” (Quran 102:1-2)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Shortening the dua to only “Assalamu alaikum” every time. That is fine if you forget, but try to learn the full qabristan jane ki dua.
  • Mispronouncing lalahiqun as “lahiqun” without the first la, which adds emphasis (“surely”).
  • Asking the dead for help. The dua is for them; we ask only Allah.
  • Making the visit a social outing with jokes and loud talk.

Teaching Qabristan Jane Ki Dua to Children

Children often come along to funerals and family grave visits. Teach them the first line, “Assalamu alaikum ahlad-diyar”, and explain that we greet the believers who passed away. Add one more phrase each week until they can say the whole qabristan jane ki dua. Keep the explanation gentle and focus on mercy and remembrance.
