Roman Urdu: Astaghfirullāha rabbī min kulli dhambin adhnabtuhū ʿamadan aw khaṭa’an sirran aw ʿalāniyatan wa atūbu ilayhi minadh-dhambil-ladhī aʿlamu wa minadh-dhambil-ladhī lā aʿlam, innaka anta ʿallāmul-ghuyūbi wa sattārul-ʿuyūbi wa ghaffārudh-dhunūb, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāhil-ʿaliyyil-ʿaẓīm.

Panchwa Kalma Meaning in English and Urdu

English: I seek forgiveness from Allah, my Lord, for every sin I have committed, deliberately or by mistake, secretly or openly. I turn to Him in repentance from the sin I know and from the sin I do not know. Surely You are the Knower of the unseen, the Concealer of faults and the Forgiver of sins. There is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.

Is Panchwa Kalma Found in the Quran or Hadith?

The complete wording of this kalma is not found as a single hadith. It is a compiled dua taught in South Asian madrasas and homes. Its meaning matches the Quran’s repeated call to seek forgiveness, for example the words of Prophet Nuh (AS) in Surah Nuh 71:10:

اسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفَّارًا

English: Seek forgiveness from your Lord; indeed He is ever Forgiving.

Reference: Quran 71:10

The next verses (71:11–12) promise rain, wealth, children and gardens to those who seek forgiveness, which shows how much Allah loves istighfar.

Benefits of Istighfar from Hadith

The Prophet ﷺ, who was sinless, still said: “By Allah, I seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him more than seventy times a day.”

Reference: Sahih Bukhari 6307

The istighfar the Prophet ﷺ himself called the best is Sayyidul Istighfar (Sahih Bukhari 6306). Read it with Urdu meaning on our Maghfirat Ki Dua page. Reciting it alongside these authentic duas is a good daily habit.

Pronunciation Tips

  • Dhambin and adhnabtuhū use the letter ذ (dhal), a soft “th” as in “this”, not a plain “z”.
  • Ghuyūb starts with غ (ghain), a gargling sound from the back of the throat.
  • In ʿamadan and ʿalāniyatan the first letter is ع (ain), which has no English equivalent; listen to a qari to learn it.
  • Read the long ending slowly: wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāhil-ʿaliyyil-ʿaẓīm.

When to Read Panchwa Kalma

  • After each salah, as part of your adhkar.
  • Before sleeping, to end the day by asking Allah to forgive it.
  • Whenever you remember a mistake, big or small.
  • When teaching children, after they have learned the first four kalmas.
