khana khane ki dua is one of the first duas every Muslim child learns, because eating is something we do several times a day. On this page you will find the Sunnah dua before eating, the dua to say if you forget, and the dua after eating, each in Arabic with Roman Urdu, Urdu tarjuma and English meaning. People also search for it as “khane ki dua”, “khana khane se pehle ki dua” or “dua before eating”.
The Sunnah khana khane ki dua before eating is short and simple: say Bismillah. Use the button below to copy the Arabic text.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
If you forget to say Bismillah at the start and remember during the meal, say this instead:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ
After finishing the meal, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to praise Allah. One authentic wording, recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari, is:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا طَيِّبًا مُبَارَكًا فِيهِ، غَيْرَ مَكْفِيٍّ وَلَا مُوَدَّعٍ وَلَا مُسْتَغْنًى عَنْهُ رَبَّنَا
Even a simple “Alhamdulillah” after eating is a form of thanks that pleases Allah, as explained in the source section below.
If you cannot read Arabic yet, this Roman Urdu version of khana khane ki dua and the dua after eating will help you pronounce each word correctly:
Read slowly at first. Once the words feel natural, try reading directly from the Arabic text above.
Bismillah means “In the name of Allah”. By saying it, you begin your meal with the remembrance of the One who provided it.
Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu means “In the name of Allah, at its beginning and at its end”.
The dua after eating means: “All praise is for Allah, abundant, good and blessed praise. It is not enough (to repay Him), nor is it bid farewell to, nor can we ever do without it, our Lord.”
The Quran reminds believers to eat from good things and to be thankful: “O you who believe, eat from the good things We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah, if it is Him you worship” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:172). It also says: “Eat and drink, but do not be excessive” (Surah Al-A’raf 7:31).
Umar ibn Abi Salamah said that the Prophet ﷺ told him as a boy: “Say the name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is near you” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5376).
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that if someone forgets to mention Allah’s name at the start, he should say “Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu” (Sunan Abi Dawud 3767).
Abu Umamah narrated that when the dining sheet was taken away, the Prophet ﷺ would say the dua after eating given above (Sahih al-Bukhari 5458). Anas ibn Malik narrated that Allah is pleased with a servant who eats something and praises Him for it (Sahih Muslim 2734).
The best time for khana khane ki dua is right before the first bite. Say Bismillah clearly enough that you hear it yourself. Children learn quickest when parents say it out loud at the dinner table.
Together with the dua, follow these simple Sunnah manners of eating:
The same Bismillah is said before drinking water, tea or milk. If several people eat together, each person should say it for himself.
The hadith of Umar ibn Abi Salamah shows that the Prophet ﷺ taught table manners to a young boy kindly and simply. Parents can do the same: start with Bismillah, then add the dua after eating once the child is comfortable.
Make khana khane ki dua part of every family meal. Praise children when they remember, and gently remind them when they forget. A small chart on the fridge also works well.

Yes. Saying Bismillah before drinking and Alhamdulillah after it is part of the same good manners.
