In the hadith the narrator was unsure of one phrase. Instead of “wa ‘aqibati amri” (the outcome of my affairs), you may also say “‘ajili amri wa ajilihi” (my affairs now and later). Both wordings appear in the narration, so either one is fine.

Istikhara Ki Dua in Roman Urdu

Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi-‘ilmika, wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika, wa as’aluka min fadlika al-‘azim. Fa innaka taqdiru wa la aqdiru, wa ta’lamu wa la a’lamu, wa anta ‘allamul-ghuyub. Allahumma in kunta ta’lamu anna hadhal-amra khairun li fi dini wa ma’ashi wa ‘aqibati amri, faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li, thumma barik li fihi. Wa in kunta ta’lamu anna hadhal-amra sharrun li fi dini wa ma’ashi wa ‘aqibati amri, fasrifhu ‘anni wasrifni ‘anhu, waqdur liyal-khaira haithu kana, thumma ardini bih.

اے اللہ! میں تیرے علم کے ذریعے تجھ سے بھلائی طلب کرتا ہوں، اور تیری قدرت کے ذریعے تجھ سے طاقت مانگتا ہوں، اور تجھ سے تیرے عظیم فضل کا سوال کرتا ہوں۔ کیونکہ تو قدرت رکھتا ہے اور میں قدرت نہیں رکھتا، تو جانتا ہے اور میں نہیں جانتا، اور تو غیب کی باتوں کو خوب جاننے والا ہے۔ اے اللہ! اگر تو جانتا ہے کہ یہ کام میرے دین، میری روزی اور میرے انجامِ کار کے لحاظ سے میرے لیے بہتر ہے تو اسے میرے لیے مقدر کر دے، اسے میرے لیے آسان کر دے، پھر اس میں میرے لیے برکت دے۔ اور اگر تو جانتا ہے کہ یہ کام میرے دین، میری روزی اور میرے انجامِ کار کے لحاظ سے میرے لیے برا ہے تو اسے مجھ سے پھیر دے اور مجھے اس سے پھیر دے، اور میرے لیے بھلائی مقدر کر دے جہاں بھی ہو، پھر مجھے اس پر راضی کر دے۔

English Meaning of the Istikhara Dua

“O Allah, I seek Your guidance by virtue of Your knowledge, I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. You have power and I have none. You know and I do not know, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affairs, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and then bless me in it. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affairs, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and then make me pleased with it.”

Chinese Translation (中文翻译)

真主啊！我凭你的知识向你求选择，凭你的大能向你求能力，我向你祈求你的宏恩。因为你有能力而我没有能力，你知道而我不知道，你是全知幽玄的。真主啊！如果你知道这件事对我的宗教、我的生计和我事情的结局是好的，那么求你为我前定它，使它对我容易，然后为我在其中降福。如果你知道这件事对我的宗教、我的生计和我事情的结局是坏的，那么求你使它远离我，使我远离它，无论好事在哪里，求你为我前定它，然后使我对它满意。

Bengali Translation (বাংলা অনুবাদ)

হে আল্লাহ! আমি তোমার জ্ঞানের মাধ্যমে তোমার কাছে কল্যাণ প্রার্থনা করছি, তোমার শক্তির মাধ্যমে তোমার কাছে সামর্থ্য চাইছি এবং তোমার মহান অনুগ্রহ প্রার্থনা করছি। কারণ তুমি সক্ষম, আমি সক্ষম নই; তুমি জানো, আমি জানি না; আর তুমি অদৃশ্য বিষয়সমূহের মহাজ্ঞানী। হে আল্লাহ! যদি তুমি জানো যে এই কাজটি আমার দ্বীন, আমার জীবিকা ও আমার কাজের পরিণামের জন্য কল্যাণকর, তবে তা আমার জন্য নির্ধারণ করো, আমার জন্য সহজ করে দাও, তারপর তাতে আমার জন্য বরকত দাও। আর যদি তুমি জানো যে এই কাজটি আমার দ্বীন, আমার জীবিকা ও আমার কাজের পরিণামের জন্য অকল্যাণকর, তবে তা আমার থেকে সরিয়ে দাও এবং আমাকে তা থেকে সরিয়ে দাও, আর কল্যাণ যেখানেই থাকুক তা আমার জন্য নির্ধারণ করো, তারপর আমাকে তাতে সন্তুষ্ট করে দাও।

ऐ अल्लाह! मैं तेरे इल्म के ज़रिए तुझसे भलाई चाहता हूँ, तेरी क़ुदरत के ज़रिए तुझसे ताक़त माँगता हूँ और तुझसे तेरे बड़े फ़ज़्ल का सवाल करता हूँ। क्योंकि तू क़ुदरत रखता है और मैं क़ुदरत नहीं रखता, तू जानता है और मैं नहीं जानता, और तू छुपी हुई बातों को ख़ूब जानने वाला है। ऐ अल्लाह! अगर तू जानता है कि यह काम मेरे दीन, मेरी रोज़ी और मेरे काम के अंजाम के लिए बेहतर है, तो इसे मेरे लिए मुक़द्दर कर दे, इसे मेरे लिए आसान कर दे, फिर इसमें मेरे लिए बरकत दे। और अगर तू जानता है कि यह काम मेरे दीन, मेरी रोज़ी और मेरे काम के अंजाम के लिए बुरा है, तो इसे मुझसे दूर कर दे और मुझे इससे दूर कर दे, और भलाई जहाँ भी हो उसे मेरे लिए मुक़द्दर कर दे, फिर मुझे उससे राज़ी कर दे।

Source of Istikhara Ki Dua in Hadith

Jabir bin Abdullah reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to teach the companions istikhara in all their matters just as he taught them a surah of the Quran. He said that when one of you intends to do something, he should pray two rak’at other than the obligatory prayer and then say this dua, and then mention his need. The full narration is in Sahih Bukhari 1166.

Note how carefully the companions learned it: like a surah of the Quran. That shows the value of the exact wording, so it is better to read the istikhara ki dua as narrated rather than in your own words only.

Quran Verses About Seeking Allah’s Choice

The spirit of the istikhara ki dua is that Allah knows what we do not. This is the meaning of the following part of Surah Al-Baqarah 2:216:

“But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.” (Quran 2:216)

বাংলা অনুবাদ: হতে পারে তোমরা কোনো কিছু অপছন্দ করো অথচ তা তোমাদের জন্য কল্যাণকর; আর হতে পারে তোমরা কোনো কিছু পছন্দ করো অথচ তা তোমাদের জন্য অকল্যাণকর। আর আল্লাহ জানেন, তোমরা জানো না। (সূরা আল-বাকারা ২:২১৬)

Istikhara also goes hand in hand with taking good advice and then trusting Allah, as in this part of Surah Aal-e-Imran 3:159:

“And consult them in the matter. Then when you have made a decision, put your trust in Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who put their trust in Him.” (Quran 3:159)

Istikhara Ka Tarika: How to Read Istikhara Ki Dua

The method in the hadith is short and simple. Here it is step by step:

1. Have a clear, permissible decision in mind, such as a job offer, a business deal, a marriage proposal or a move to another city.
2. Make wudu and pray two rak’at of nafl salah, separate from the obligatory prayers. Avoid the times in which voluntary prayer is not allowed.
3. After the two rak’at, raise your hands, praise Allah and send durood on the Prophet ﷺ if you wish, then read the istikhara ki dua.
4. When you reach “hadhal-amr” (this matter), think of your decision or name it, for example “this job” or “this proposal”. The hadith says the person should mention his need.
5. Then go ahead with what you think is best, and trust Allah with the result.

Most people read the dua after the salam, which matches the words of the hadith. Some scholars also allow reading it before the salam. If you are unsure, follow the practice of a scholar you trust.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Waiting for a dream. The hadith does not mention dreams. Many scholars explain that the answer shows in how Allah makes the matter easy or difficult for you, and in a settled heart.
• Making istikhara for clear obligations or sins. Istikhara is for permissible choices. There is no istikhara about whether to pray the fard salah or whether to do something haram.
• Skipping advice. Istikhara does not replace mashwara. Ask experienced people, then make istikhara and decide.
• Reading it without understanding. Read the Urdu tarjuma of the istikhara ki dua a few times so your heart means what your tongue says.

Also remember that the result of istikhara ki dua is not always what you wanted. The last words, “then make me pleased with it”, teach us to accept Allah’s choice with a calm heart.

Istikhara ki dua kab parhni chahiye?
