Hasbunallahu Wa Nimal Wakeel in Arabic

The phrase is part of verse 173 of Surah Al Imran (chapter 3). It is only four words in Arabic, so it is easy to memorise and can be read in a few seconds.

حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

There is also a singular form, used when a person says it about himself. It means “Allah is sufficient for me”. According to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), these were the last words of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) when he was thrown into the fire, as recorded in Sahih Bukhari 4564.

حَسْبِيَ اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

Meaning: Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.

中文翻译:真主能使我满足,他是优美的监护者。

বাংলা অনুবাদ: আল্লাহই আমার জন্য যথেষ্ট, এবং তিনি সর্বোত্তম কর্মবিধায়ক।

Source of Hasbunallahu Wa Nimal Wakeel in the Quran

The phrase comes in Surah Al Imran 3:173. The verse describes the believers who were warned that a large army had gathered against them. Instead of being frightened, their faith grew stronger and they said these words.

الَّذِينَ قَالَ لَهُمُ النَّاسُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ جَمَعُوا لَكُمْ فَاخْشَوْهُمْ فَزَادَهُمْ إِيمَانًا وَقَالُوا حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

Meaning: “Those to whom people said, ‘The people have gathered against you, so fear them.’ But it only increased them in faith, and they said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.'” (Quran 3:173)

The very next verse, Surah Al Imran 3:174, tells us the result: they returned with favour and bounty from Allah, and no harm touched them.

What the Hadith Says

In Sahih Bukhari 4563, Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) explained that these words were said by Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) when he was thrown into the fire, and by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when people said, “A great army is gathering against you, so fear them.” It only increased the believers in faith.

Sahih Bukhari 4564 adds that the last words of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) when he was thrown into the fire were “Hasbiyallahu wa ni’mal wakeel” – Allah is sufficient for me.

A Similar Dua: Hasbiyallahu La Ilaha Illa Huwa

A closely related phrase appears at the end of Surah At-Tawbah, in verse 9:129. Allah tells the Prophet ﷺ what to say if people turn away from the message.

فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا فَقُلْ حَسْبِيَ اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ ۖ وَهُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ

Meaning: “But if they turn away, say: ‘Allah is sufficient for me. There is no god except Him. In Him I put my trust, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.'” (Quran 9:129)

When to Read Hasbunallahu Wa Nimal Wakeel

The Quran and the hadith show this phrase being said at moments of fear, pressure and threat. You can say it in Arabic at any time, in any language you think in, and without wudu. Common moments include:

  • When you feel afraid, anxious or under pressure from people.
  • When someone threatens you or tries to frighten you.
  • Before a hard task, an exam, a journey or a difficult conversation.
  • When you have done everything you can and must now leave the result to Allah.
  • When you feel wronged and want to hand the matter over to Allah instead of reacting in anger.

It goes well with trust in Allah (tawakkul). Allah says in Surah At-Talaq 65:3: “And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him.” Saying hasbunallahu wa nimal wakeel is a way of putting that trust into words.

How to Read It

  • Read hasbunallahu wa nimal wakeel slowly and clearly in Arabic, using the copy box above if you want to save it on your phone.
  • Think about the meaning while you say it: Allah is enough, and He manages affairs better than anyone.
  • Use “Hasbunallahu” (us) when speaking for a group or family, and “Hasbiyallahu” (me) when speaking for yourself. Both are authentic.
  • Keep taking the practical steps you can. Trusting Allah does not mean giving up effort.

Common Mistakes

  • Dropping letters: saying “Hasbullah” or “Hasbunalla” changes the words. Say the full “Hasbunallahu”.
  • “Ni’mal” vs “nimal”: there is a light stop (‘ain) in “ni’ma”. Roman spelling cannot show it well, so listen to the Arabic.
  • Fixed counts: you may see messages asking you to read it a set number of times for a set result. The Quran verse and the Bukhari reports cited here do not set any number for hasbunallahu wa nimal wakeel, so read it whenever you need it.
  • Using it as a curse: the phrase is about trusting Allah. It is not a way to wish harm on people.
