Why Is It Called Dua e Masura?
The word “masura” comes from the Arabic ma’thur, which means “transmitted” or “narrated”. A dua ma’thura is a supplication that has reached us from the Prophet ﷺ himself, rather than one composed by later people.
So the name simply tells you that the words are not ours. They were taught by the Prophet ﷺ, and that is why Muslims are careful to learn them exactly.
Source of Dua e Masura: Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim
Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Allah’s Messenger ﷺ: “Teach me an invocation with which I may invoke Allah in my prayer.” The Prophet ﷺ told him to say this dua. The hadith is recorded in Sahih Bukhari 834 and also in Sahih Muslim 2705.
Imam al-Bukhari placed this hadith in the chapter on supplication before the salam. That placement is the reason the dua is widely read in the final sitting of namaz.
The meaning also matches the Quran. Allah describes the believers who, when they wrong themselves, remember Him and ask forgiveness, “and who forgives sins except Allah?” (Quran 3:135).
A Similar Dua from the Quran
Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) and Hawwa made a dua with the same humble admission of wrongdoing:
رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ
English meaning: “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers.” (Quran 7:23)
When and How to Read Dua e Masura in Namaz
In the last sitting (qa’dah) of every namaz, the common order followed in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh is:
- Recite the tashahhud, Attahiyat.
- Recite Durood Ibrahim.
- Recite this dua (Allahumma inni zalamtu nafsi).
- Turn the face to the right and then to the left with the salam.
The Prophet ﷺ also allowed choosing a dua after the tashahhud. In Sahih Bukhari 835, after teaching the tashahhud, he said: “Then select the invocation you like best and recite it.” Dua e masura is one of the best choices because the Prophet ﷺ taught it for this very purpose.
In Sahih Muslim 588, the Prophet ﷺ also told us to seek refuge with Allah from four things after the final tashahhud: the punishment of Hell, the punishment of the grave, the trials of life and death, and the evil of the Dajjal. Some people add that dua as well.
Outside namaz, you can read the same words as a heartfelt dua for forgiveness at any time, for example after a mistake or before sleeping.
Common Mistakes When Reading Dua e Masura
- Reading it before Durood: in the usual order it comes after Durood Ibrahim, not after Attahiyat directly.
- Wrong pronunciation of “zalamtu”: the letter is ظ (zaa), pronounced with the tongue between the teeth. Practise “zalamtu” and “zulman” with a teacher if you can.
- Dropping “min ‘indika”: the phrase “a forgiveness from Yourself” is part of the dua and should not be skipped.
- Rushing: the final sitting is not the time to hurry. Say each phrase clearly and think about its meaning.
Teaching This Dua to Children
Children usually learn Attahiyat and Durood first, then this dua. Break it into four parts: “Allahumma inni zalamtu nafsi zulman kaseeran”, then “wa la yaghfiruz-zunuba illa anta”, then “faghfir li maghfiratan min ‘indika warhamni”, and finally “innaka antal-Ghafurur-Raheem”.
Teach one part a day and recite it together in prayer. Explaining the meaning in simple words, “I made mistakes, only Allah can forgive me”, helps them pray with feeling.
