Chhata Kalma Meaning in English and Urdu
English: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowingly associating anything with You, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do not know. I repent from it. I free myself from disbelief, polytheism, lying, backbiting, innovation, tale-carrying, indecency, slander and all sins. I have submitted, and I say: there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah; Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah.
The 9 Sins Named in Chhata Kalma
In this kalma a Muslim declares himself free from nine things. Knowing what each word means turns the kalma into a checklist for daily life:
| Arabic | Urdu | English |
|---|---|---|
| al-kufr (الْكُفْر) | Kufr | disbelief |
| ash-shirk (الشِّرْك) | Shirk | associating partners with Allah |
| al-kidhb (الْكِذْب) | Jhoot | lying |
| al-ghībah (الْغِيْبَة) | Ghibat | backbiting |
| al-bidʿah (الْبِدْعَة) | Bidat | innovation in religion |
| an-namīmah (النَّمِيْمَة) | Chughli | tale-carrying between people |
| al-fawāḥish (الْفَوَاحِش) | Be-hayai | shameless and indecent deeds |
| al-buhtān (الْبُهْتَان) | Bohtan | slander, false accusation |
| al-maʿāṣī kullihā (الْمَعَاصِيْ كُلِّهَا) | Tamam gunah | all sins |
The Quran warns about several of these directly, for example shirk in Surah An-Nisa 4:48 and backbiting in Surah Al-Hujurat 49:12.
Is Chhata Kalma Found in the Hadith?
The opening of this kalma is close to a dua the Prophet ﷺ taught Abu Bakr (RA). He told him that shirk can be more hidden than the creeping of an ant, and taught him to say:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أُشْرِكَ بِكَ وَأَنَا أَعْلَمُ، وَأَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لِمَا لَا أَعْلَمُ
Reference: Al-Adab al-Mufrad 716
The rest of the wording is compiled and is not found as one hadith. It is taught in South Asia as a declaration rejecting disbelief and major sins.
Pronunciation Tips
- Ushrika (أُشْرِكَ) means “I associate”; say the “sh” and “r” clearly so the word is not blurred.
- Al-kidhb and al-ghībah use ذ (dhal) and غ (ghain), two letters many learners mix up with z and g.
- An-namīmah has a stretched “ee” sound in the middle: na-mee-mah.
- The list of sins is long, so read it in small groups of two or three words and take a breath between groups.
Why Read Chhata Kalma?
- It asks Allah’s protection from hidden shirk, which the hadith says can creep in unnoticed.
- It seeks forgiveness for sins we did not even realise we committed.
- It renews the declaration of faith at the end with the words of the first kalma.
- It reminds us of everyday sins like lying, backbiting and chughli that are easy to fall into.
