Ayatul Kursi with Urdu Tarjuma

This Urdu translation is by Maulana Muhammad Junagarhi, one of the translations most read in Pakistan and India.

English Meaning

“Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.” (Quran 2:255, Sahih International)

Hindi Translation (हिंदी अनुवाद)

The greatest verse of the Quran: the Prophet ﷺ asked Ubayy bin Ka’b which verse in the Book of Allah is the greatest. When Ubayy answered with this verse, the Prophet ﷺ struck him on the chest and said, “May knowledge be pleasing to you, Abu al-Mundhir.” This is recorded in Sahih Muslim 810.

Protection through the night: Abu Hurairah was guarding the Zakat of Ramadan when a thief came. The thief told him that if he recited Ayat al-Kursi when going to bed, a guard from Allah would stay with him and Satan would not come near him until morning. The Prophet ﷺ said, “He told you the truth, although he is a liar,” and explained that it was Satan. Read the full hadith in Sahih Bukhari 5010.

When to Read Ayatul Kursi

  • Before sleeping: recite it once in bed, as taught in Sahih Bukhari 5010. Many people read it together with the sone ki dua and the last three surahs.
  • After salah: many Muslims make it part of their adhkar after the fard prayers.
  • Morning and evening: it is a common part of daily remembrance for protection and peace of heart.
  • At any time: it is a verse of the Quran, so reading it is worship whenever you recite it.

Common Mistakes When Reciting

  • Mixing up sinah and nawm: both words are there; do not drop “wa la nawm”.
  • Rushing the long vowels: “la ilaha illa huwa” and “bima sha'” have long sounds that change the meaning if cut short.
  • Wrong letters: say “hifzuhuma” with the heavy Arabic letter, and keep the ‘ain clear in “‘ilmihi” and “‘azim”.
  • Relying only on Roman text: transliteration is a starting point; learn it from a teacher or a recorded qari to get every letter right.

Simple Tips to Memorise Ayatul Kursi

Split the verse into the nine short parts shown in the Roman Urdu section above. Learn one or two parts a day and join them to the parts you already know.
